AVID
AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college-readiness system designed to support students in their academic journey. The program's core mission is to close the achievement gap by equipping students with the skills and mindset needed for success in high school, college, and beyond. At the elementary and middle school levels, AVID is typically implemented as a school-wide system rather than just a single elective class, integrating its foundational strategies across all subjects and grade levels. The goal is to build a "college-going culture" throughout the entire school.
In elementary school, AVID focuses on laying the groundwork for academic habits and a growth mindset. Teachers and students utilize the WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading) framework to guide daily instruction. Students learn basic organizational skills like using binders and planners, practice effective note-taking, and engage in collaborative activities. The curriculum is tailored to be age-appropriate, helping young students develop self-advocacy and communication skills. AVID Elementary also emphasizes partnerships between students, teachers, and families to create a strong support network that encourages a positive attitude towards learning and future aspirations.
As students transition to middle school, the AVID program becomes more focused and structured. While the WICOR strategies are still integrated school-wide, many schools also offer a dedicated AVID elective class. This class targets students in the "academic middle"—those with the potential and desire to attend a four-year university but who may be the first in their family to do so. In this elective, students receive daily instruction on advanced organizational and study skills, critical thinking, and time management. A key component of the middle school AVID program is the use of tutorials, where students bring questions from their core classes and work in collaborative groups with trained tutors to find solutions. This not only reinforces their understanding of the content but also teaches them how to ask higher-level questions and work with peers. The program also includes college and career exploration through guest speakers and field trips, making the dream of higher education feel more tangible.
