Reclassification Criteria

Reclassification is a significant milestone that recognizes English Learner students who have demonstrated proficiency in English and achieved academic success. Students who meet the district's reclassification criteria are honored each year at the Merced City School District Reclassification Ceremony held at the historic Merced Theatre, a celebration of their hard work, perseverance, and accomplishments. Following reclassification, students continue to be monitored and supported to ensure their continued success.

MCSD Reclassification Criteria

Students are eligible for reclassification when they successfully meet each of the four criteria listed below.

Reclassification Cut Scores

To meet Criterion 2: Basic Skills, students must demonstrate academic performance comparable to their English-proficient peers. California Education Code requires districts to include a measure of basic skills when determining reclassification eligibility. Merced City School District uses local assessment data to establish grade-level cut scores based on the average performance of English-proficient students. These scores are recalculated and published twice each year to ensure transparency and consistency in the reclassification process.
