Student Events

The Merced City School District Spelling Bee is a written competition where Elementary and Junior High students challenge their peers to become the best speller. Top spellers for both the Elementary and Junior High portion of the competition are eligible to compete in the Merced County Office of Education Spelling Bee to challenge the top spellers from all schools within Merced County.

NEW for 2025! Merced County Office of Education is hosting its' first Scripps Regional Spelling Bee in addition to the CA qualifier that is held in December. Schools can register separately for each one. This competition will be held March 15, 2025 and will be an oral spelling bee.

One student will qualify for the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

The Merced Field of Honor takes place at the Merced College in November to honor those who have and those who continue to protect our freedom.

MCSD 8th grade students visit the Field of Honor to learn about national symbols, values, and read the stories of our honorees. Prior to visiting the Field of Honor, students learn about the US flags, flag etiquette and what they mean to our country, and will research local fallen heroes and research jobs of First Responders.

Camp Green Meadows is located in Fish Camp, CA, in the Sierra National Forest just 2 miles outside of Yosemite National Park on Highway 41. Camp Green Meadows Outdoor School provides an outdoor environmental education program for generations of Central Valley 6th graders and celebrates its 60th year in 2024. Through the outdoor school program, students gain hands-on experience of the outdoors while learning standards-based curriculum.

The school is dedicated to providing high quality science programs to the communities it serves! 

History Day is a year-long educational program that encourages students to explore local, state, national, and world history.

NATIONAL HISTORY DAY - Merced County (Grades 4-8) - February 6-7, 2025

Every Kid Outdoors was created so 4th grade students and their families could discover wildlife, its' resources, and history for free!

Created by local teachers, the writing festival celebrates student writing with over 40 categories.  Awards are given by grade and category and a gold medal for the top two entries is awarded in each grade. 

Part of a countywide program that starts at the school level, each school can send up to 3 students per grade to represent their site.  Speeches must be the original work of the student and must follow the categories of Persuasive, Tall Tale, Legend, or Fable.

The Merced Symphony Children’s Concert is an interactive music performance for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students designed to introduce students to the world of music. The performance includes a mix of classical and contemporary music, as well as interactive elements such as sing-alongs and opportunities for children to try musical instruments.

Battle of the Books (BOB) is an exciting literacy event for our middle school students.  Each middle school has teams of students who read Battle of the Books titles for a competition in the Spring.  Novels picked for BOB are always student favorites and award winners.  On the day of the competition, students answer questions about the books they've read.  Participating in Battle of the Books is a fun competition that teaches teamwork while promoting the love of reading!  Look to your school's teacher librarian for information each fall.
